I am Muslim and I am gay

Not a contradiction. Not your mistake, not your sin.

You grew up in a family of prayer, fasting, and "Allah commanded it." And you are gay. And it seems incompatible. It is not incompatible. 1400 years of Islam did not know modern homophobia. What you hear now is 50 years of Wahhabi import from Saudi Arabia, not your Islam.

What the Qur'an actually says

The story of Lot (Sodom)
Progressive Islamic scholars read it as about violence and the violation of hospitality, not love. A crowd wants to rape Lot's guests — that is a crime regardless of gender. The Qur'an never uses a word for "homosexuality". The term liwat was coined centuries later.
Four eyewitnesses
The Hanafi school (dominant in Central Asia) required four truthful witnesses to the act itself for a penalty. This is an impossible standard. In a thousand years of the Bukhara emirate, Khiva, and Kokand — not one documented execution for a same-sex act.
Ta'zir, not hadd
Hadd is the death penalty. Taʿzir is discretionary — the judge decides, often minimal. Hanafis classified liwat as taʿzir, not hadd. A deliberate theological position — stricter in theory than in practice.

A thousand years of poetry — male love as canon

Abu Nuwas (755-814)
Court poet of Caliph Harun al-Rashid. Wrote openly about his love for young men. His verse is canonical Arabic literature for 1000+ years. Taught in madrasas.
Rumi and Shams of Tabriz (13th c.)
One of the most spiritual unions in Islam. "I was raw, I became cooked, I burned" — about losing Shams. The entire Masnavi is about this love.
Hafez, Saʿdi, Jami
Great Persian Sufi poets. Ghazals on male beauty are not fragments but the main genre. Taught in madrasas for centuries.
Babur (1499, Andijan)
Founder of the Mughal dynasty wrote in his autobiography: "I was struck with love for a boy named Baburi." This is your countryman, founder of a great Muslim empire.

Where modern rigidity came from

1970s: Wahhabi import
After the oil boom Saudi Arabia financed mosques, textbooks, and imams worldwide. Wahhabi theology — a narrow Hanbali variant — was not practised in Central Asia or India before this. Modern homophobia in Central Asian mosques is not your Islam, it is an import.
Soviet law
Article 121 of the RSFSR Criminal Code (1934) is not sharia. It is secular Soviet law. Enforced in UzSSR, KazSSR, TajSSR, KyrSSR. It is this law that shaped the "cultural norm" of condemnation. Full history →

You can be Muslim

Prayer, fasting, the shahada, zakat, hajj — if you want them — they are yours. Nobody has the right to take your faith from you because of whom you love. Babur prayed. Rumi prayed. They were Muslims. You are too.

This is not a contradiction. It is not a sin in a vacuum. It is part of a 1400-year tradition that modern Wahhabis are trying to rewrite. Do not let them.

If it is still hard

Internal Islam + gay conflict is one of the main causes of depression among LGBT Muslims. You are not alone. There are Muslim LGBTQ+ communities: Imaan (UK), Muslim Alliance for Sexual and Gender Diversity (US), Hidayah (UK). Limited in Russian, but rich literature in English.
